Julia Cook Was Here!

On September 11, Freeman Elementary hosted author Julia Cook. Cook gave three presentations to the
elementary and visited both preschool sessions. She read a few of her 99 books to the students! Cook’s
books are written in a way that keeps the students’ interest, yet teach a lesson. We heard how once
words come out of our mouth they cannot be pulled back in, that we should have a bubble gum brain
versus a brick brain, and how important it is to use our ears to listen. Those were just a few of the
lessons we heard. Each session concluded with Julia bringing out her travelling companion, her teacup
dog, Kirby. Miss Kirby was a hit with the children! Cook concluded her day with a small reception after
school, allowing teachers time to visit with her. Funding for Julia Cook’s visit was provided through
grants from the Hevelone Foundation and the Freeman School Foundation.
