“Kindness is the language that the deaf can hear and the blind can see.” – Mark Twain

In a world where we can choose anything, we hope that all our Freeman family will choose Kindness each and every day.  This year, as a whole school, we are focusing on “Kindness is FREEman” and the fourth graders are no exception to this.  The past two years of being in 4th grade, we have started our year talking about being kind.  With that comes learning skills to problem solving, having a proper disagreement, giving a sincere apology, and talking about how the words we say each and every day, can never be taken back.  We want to teach our students that it’s okay to disagree, but there is a respectful way to go about the conversations you have with others when disagreeing.  We also know that mistakes are going to happen, but there is also a way to apologize and be sincere about the words that are used.  Our words can have a huge effect on people, positive or negative.  The 4th graders did a little task to visualize how our words can’t be taken back, by using a tube of toothpaste.  They had 40 seconds to get all the toothpaste out of the tube and then 2 minutes to try to get all the toothpaste back in.  Needless to say, it was impossible to put the toothpaste back in.  Just like our words, once they are out there for others to hear, there is no taking them back! In the story Mr. Peabody’s Apples by Madonna, we see the same thing happen with rumors and gossip.  Ask your 4th grader about the feathers in the pillow and what they represented!!! We are ready for another great year and we will remember that Kindness is FREEman!!
